Research & publications

Our work is on how rainfall becomes runoff and flooding, and on turning that understanding into forecasts and tools that people can act on. It spans hydrology and hydroclimatology, rainfall and flood modelling and forecasting, and the use of remote sensing, GIS and AI/ML alongside physics-based methods. Current projects include urban flood modelling for Hyderabad City, riverine flood modelling for the Brahmaputra, Godavari and Narmada river basins, and rainfall forecasting.

Urban flooding in Hyderabad

'Urban Flooding' has been getting much attention off late, and it will be an issue for many countries including India posing a wide variety of challenges for a variety of reasons. We, at the IIT Hyderabad, are working to address the issue. As part of our systematic approach, we came up with SnapFlood and Sixer Tweet. We are trying to address the global issues with local efforts, and if you want to be part of it reach us.

Streamflow forecasting

Riverine flood modelling and streamflow forecasting for the Brahmaputra, Godavari and Narmada river basins, under the Monsoon Mission, using hydrologic, hydrodynamic and statistical-dynamical approaches.

Urban hydroclimate and rainfall

Rainfall forecasting, and the space-time behaviour of rainfall and climate extremes over Indian cities and river basins. Both physics-based and AI/ML techniques are explored.

Five hydrograph panels plotting water surface elevation over time at three gauge sites. A black observed trace runs beneath four coloured model traces, which spread apart at the flood peaks.

Hydrologic data and citizen science

Hydrologic database development in India, citizen science and crowdsourced observation, and the products and decision-support tools built on them.
